The driver responsible for injuring himself and three others in a horrific head on collision near Highbrook on Thursday is in police custody.
The 40-year-old man will be facing charges of unlawfully taking a motor vehicle and endangering transport after he drove a stolen car the wrong way down the Southern Motorway, crashing into an innocent motorist.
The crash, which shut down all southbound lanes for two hours, was captured on camera by the Police eagle helicopter.
The eagle helicopter was deployed shortly after 9am on Thursday when complaints about the driver were first received by police.
After driving erratically through parts of the Flat Bush area, on multiple occasions putting members of the public at risk, the driver was seen entering the southbound lanes using the Highbrook motorway off-ramp.
This footage was later leaked to the public prompting an internal police investigation.
The alleged offending driver is also facing a number of serious charges including assault, wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm’ and threatening to kill in connection to a previous unrelated incident last Wednesday.
The Times understands the driver appeared in the Manukau District Court on Saturday morning.
