League legend dies

Shane Dowsett, a former Kiwis league player who lived in Bucklands Beach, has died.

New Zealand Rugby League (NZRL) said it was saddened to hear of the passing of Dowsett, Kiwi #495.

“The Auckland Rugby League and Otahuhu Leopards legend, Shane Dowsett, spent over 25 years in the game, playing in five Fox Memorial finals and three as captain. He then reached the pinnacle of league success by touring with the Kiwis in 1971, earning his Test debut,” NZRL said.

“He was renowned for his fierce defence, toughness and lack of fear.”

Dowsett died on June 9, aged 74.

A death notice in the NZ Herald said, “A fun-loving family man with a huge heart and appetite for life. A true champion who fought a heroic battle to stay with us all. Too loved to ever be forgotten.

“Beloved husband and life-long soulmate of Sharon. Adored superstar Dad of Tanya and Kyle. Father in-law to Richard and Trish. Cherished Pop to Brittney, Jackson, Kelsey and Grady and great-grandad to Axton.

Beloved brother to Brent and the late Lyndene. Son of Dave and May.

“Hugely popular with the whole extended family and everyone he met. A proud and passionate Otahuhu Rugby League club legend.”
