Auckland Council has launched its latest contestable funding round for sport and recreation facilities across the city.

Its Sport and Recreation Facilities Investment Fund for 2023 is a 10-year, $150 million fund provided through its 2021-2031 10-year budget.

For the 2023 funding round, $13.4m will be available for planning and development of sport and recreation facilities.

Dave Stewart, the council’s acting general manager, Active Communities, says the multi-million-dollar investment will enable more Aucklanders to participate in community sport and recreation activities.

“Sport and recreation continues to be a priority for Aucklanders of all ages with many people wanting choices when looking to be active.

“This fund looks to address sport and recreation infrastructure shortfalls and respond to changing preferences by Aucklanders.

“Its focus is on creating the best outcomes for the community while ensuring value for investment is achieved, all while getting Aucklanders, especially tamariki (children), more active.”

The fund is contestable and open to non-council organisations for significant facility development.

It focuses on communities in the greatest need of investment and large-scale community sport facility development projects that can leverage additional investment.

The 2023 funding round is open for stage-one applications from November 14 to January 31 next year, with stage-two applications to be invited on March 10 next year.
