Auckland artist Amrit Kaur’s latest exhibition opens at Uxbridge Arts and Culture in Howick at the Malcolm Smith Gallery on February 24.
Fragments of Us is Kaur’s first solo exhibition in Auckland and includes more than 25 new paintings produced by the artist over the last year.
Taking inspiration from the natural world, Kaur’s works balance figuration and abstraction as they contemplate everyday life and explore the overlooked pieces of a busy-day-today world.
The artist’s ambition is to explore humanity’s adjustment to its place in the natural world, highlighting the multiple personalities embodied in each of us.
Kaur observes that her paintings “begin in nature, influenced by my surroundings, but resolve in the contemplative solitude of my studio”.
Reflecting that process, the exhibition will include objects and found materials alongside her paintings – relics that illuminate her artistic process.
Uxbridge director Paul Brobbel says: “The centre is thrilled to open the year’s exhibition programme with an emerging local artist with such a strong and confident practice.”
Many of the paintings in Fragments of Us will be available for purchase through Uxbridge.
Fragments of Us runs from February 24 to April 6 and is open 10am to 4pm every day (except Sundays).
Amrit Kaur
Amrit Kaur is an artist based in Flat Bush who’s working in a range of mediums including drawing, painting and mixed media.
Recognised for her contemporary approach to floral subjects, Kaur’s work is identifiable for its unique blend of figurative linework and abstract sensibilities.
In recent years her work has featured extensively in solo and group exhibitions throughout Auckland and Aotearoa including exhibitions with Mavis & Co. (Hamilton), Ponsonby Central, the Upstairs Gallery, the Square Edge Arts Centre (Palmerston North), the Refinery Artspace (Nelson), the 25th Waitakere Arts Trust exhibition and the Auckland Art Show.
