Lucky to go fishing three times in one week

PIERRE TROLLIP knows his way around a fishing rod and line. He’s keen to share his knowledge with Times readers in his new regular column.

Previously, I wrote about the huge storm that lashed us and to make up for missing that week’s solo small boat fishing adventure, a second trip was the plan.

With the SkipperI subscription, I can go as often as I like, using any one of the twenty five Haines Hunter SF545 boats from any one of the three marinas – Half Moon Bay, Gulf Harbour or Westhaven.

Actually, I managed a third fishing trip last week. My mate Bevan invited me to join him on his powercat on Saturday.

So, a spoiled pensioner fishing three times in the week! I mean, why wouldn’t you?

We spent a few hours anchored on Bevan’s spot in light winds. With 14 nice snapper between the three of us, we ambled back to the berth.

This trip, as well as others, can be viewed on my YouTube channel: “OutSmart – The Fishing Pensioner”. Like, subscribe and visit often. I do try to publish an episode every week.

Armed with the details of Bevan’s spot, I steamed out there on the SkipperI Haines Hunter SF545.

Anchored in 9m on an outgoing tide with zero wind, I even removed my jumper and beanie.

The usual first fish had to go back – an old superstition of mine. Luckily it was an undersized snapper.

The second snapper shortly thereafter was a healthy 42cm specimen.

Then they started queuing up to get onto the boat! If I kept the 31cm and 32cm snapper, I would have brought home my quota.

Again, signs that the fishing is improving. There were none of these “zombies” as reported from the West Coast.

I had two cameras rolling as well as the drone up. Keep an eye out for the next YouTube episode. Catch you next week.
