Police say one person has died after being found injured inside a vehicle in east Auckland this morning.

A police spokesperson says officers are responding to an incident in Pakuranga Heights.

“At around 6.45am, we received a report that a series of gun shots had been heard on Marvon Downs Avenue.

“One person has been located injured inside a vehicle at the intersection of Marvon Downs Avenue and Pixie Place.

“They were attended to by medical services, but sadly have died at the scene.

“There will be a significant police presence in the area this morning, as we work to find out what has occurred and who is responsible.

“We are speaking with local residents, and anyone who can provide us with information is urged to call police on 105 quoting the reference number P059690585.

“More information will be provided to media proactively, when we are in a position to do so.”

News of the incident began this morning when locals posted on social media about hearing what sounded like gunshots just before 7am.

One person said: “A driver was apprehended by cops with rifles in Cascades Rd right in front of me just after 7am.

“Stocky guy handcuffed and an ambulance redirected to a different address. More cops came flying past to a diff address! Was quite scary!”

Nearby Elm Park School has posted an alert on its Facebook page that states: “Important Notice: Due to a major incident on Marvon Downs Road, which police have responded to, please note there is no immediate danger to Elm Park School.

“However, there is a strong police presence which may inhibit access to the school from Cascades Road side.

“I have spoken to the police this morning and have been fully assured the school can remain open. If any updates are required, I will put another notification out. Sarah Baleicakau, Principal.”
