With spring not too far away, the Howick Art Group is preparing their next competitive exhibition.

This group was founded nearly 60 years ago, in 1965, and has been meeting regularly ever since.

The Howick Art Group Spring Exhibition will be held in the Bucklands Beach and Eastern Memorial Hall, from September 1st to 8th. Each day, it will be held from 9.30am to 4pm.

For the last few years, the Club has held an annual Exhibition within the community of Howick.

In the last two years, the annual Exhibition has been moved to Spring to become the Spring Exhibition.

There are multiple categories that the painted artworks are judged in, such as contemporary, still life, abstract, seascapes and landscapes, with landscapes and seascapes being the biggest categories.

The judges are Paul Hooker, a retired contemporary artist, and Matt Downman, a Fine Arts lecturer at the Whitecliffe Studio. Matt will be judging the students category.

This category is a new addition, giving Bucklands Beach Intermediate and Howick Intermediate School students the opportunity to showcase their artwork skills.

Their pieces have been painted with the theme “The Eastern Shoreline” in mind.

The theme was chosen to raise awareness of how fragile our shoreline is.

The group is very pleased with how the exhibition is coming together.

Merv Appleton is the president of the Howick Art Group.

“It’s coming together very well.” he commented, “(There has) been a lot of hard work put in by club members and volunteers.”

This exhibition is a wonderful opportunity for people to celebrate art and the amazing history of the Bucklands Beach/Howick area.
