Intermediate school-aged girls have beaten older ones in a “spectacular display of talent and dedication” at a trans-Tasman cheerleading contest.

Traci Burke, of All Star Fame Cheerleading Gym, says the Bucklands Beach Intermediate (BBI) team claimed the first-place gold medal at their first competition of the 2024 season.

The 29-strong squad of years 7-8 students were victorious in the recent Australasian Majors held at Eventfinda Stadium on Auckland’s North Shore.

Burke, who also works at BBI and coaches at All Star Fame Cheerleading Gym based in Pakuranga, says the triumph is deserved because of all the hard work put in by the athletes before the one-day competition.

“They have practised diligently every Friday morning to showcase their commitment by braving the early hours and cold mornings to refine their routine,” says Burke.

“Their hard work and perseverance paid off. Competing against a field of strong school teams, including college teams, Bucklands Beach Intermediate not only secured first place in their division but also emerged as the Grand Champions.

“This top accolade was a testament to their impressive performance and flawless execution, particularly notable as some team members were performing for the very first time.”

Burke’s coaching colleagues for the squad are Charlotte Harrison and Caitlin O’Neill.

Australian teams competing in the event “performed virtually” by submitting videos of their routines.

BBI has had a cheerleading team each year since 2012 delivering regular successes.

“The team’s victory is a shining example of what can be achieved through dedication and teamwork,” says Burke.

“All our local school teams’ dedication proved successful, with Macleans College and Glendowie College coming first in their divisions, and Pakuranga College second.

“We really enjoy having the school teams train at our cheer gym and our coaches really enjoy coaching them.

“Our club athletes love being part of their school teams.”
