A school’s excited teachers and pupils became a living kaleidoscope for their first ever Crazy Colour Fun Day.

Sommerville School associate principal Emma Cooper says the recent event was an “enormous undertaking for a specialist school as we wanted to ensure it was inclusive for all of our learners”.

The school’s catchment area is from Maraetai and its community and pupils are east Auckland-based, Cooper says.

The school has satellite classes at Howick College, Owairoa Primary, Howick Intermediate, Pakuranga Intermediate, Riverhills School and Anchorage Park School, she says.

“Sommerville School is the largest specialist school in Aotearoa with over 360 incredible learners between the ages of five and 21 across 15 sites in the eastern suburbs of Auckland.

“Our base school in Panmure is our ‘mothership’, with 17 satellite classes in local primary, intermediate and secondary schools from Glendowie through to Owairoa in Howick.

“Sommerville pride ourselves on being ‘more than a school’, offering opportunities that enrich and uplift every learner’s school experience.”

Its Crazy Colour Fun Day was inspired by the Colour Run concept, Cooper says.

“The school believes in our learners having the same opportunities as they would at any other school, and a Colour Run is one of those opportunities.

“With support from our premier sponsor, EmbroidMe East Tamaki, and volunteers from NZ Police, ANZ, Kiwibank and the school community, our team at Sommerville created our very own adapted version of a school Colour Run.

“It was such a hit with our learners that it looks like this may be a regular event on the school calendar.”
