News media are reporting one of New Zealand’s most senior police officers is under investigation.
Deputy Commissioner Jevon McSkimming was one of the two officers considered as a contender to become commissioner when Andrew Coster left the role.
The position of commissioner instead went to Richard Chambers.
McSkimming, 51, is said to be the focus of investigations by the Independent Police Conduct Authority (IPCA) as well as New Zealand Police.
Neither police nor Police Minister Mark Mitchell nor the IPCA have commented publicly on the situation.
McSkimming has held police roles in Auckland and Southland after becoming an officer in 1996.
He’s a well-known advocate for rural policing and led the police’s transition from Holden to Skoda vehicles.
