Auckland Transport’s gender pay gap exceeds the national median, with women earning 12.09 per cent less than their male employees.

At the Auckland Transport (AT) board meeting last month, board member Dale Dillicar raised concerns about AT’s large gender pay gap.

While acknowledging AT’s efforts, Dillicar wanted to understand the cause of the disparity.

“The AT gender pay gap is higher than the national average.

“I would be interested to understand what management is doing to address that,” Dillicar said.

AT’s 2024 pay gap data shows the median pay difference between men and women is 12.09 per cent.

In the same year, Stats NZ found the median gender pay gap for the entire New Zealand workforce was 8.2 per cent.

AT chief executive Dean Kimpton said it was important to understand this metric because “metrics are metrics”.

AT’s people and performance director Karen Duffy said that funding had been set aside to address the gender pay gap.

“We’re an infrastructure design and delivery organisation and we have a predominance of males in that space,” Duffy said.

“We have a great programme of new Pasifika and Māori female talent coming into our engineering space purposely to address that at this early stage.”

She added that through targeted recruitment and ongoing investment, AT was making progress.
