Transpower says work is progressing steadily in the east Auckland sections of a large-scale cabling rejuvenation project.

The national electricity grid operators and distributor’s Brownhill to Pakūranga cable repair project is “essential work to maintain a reliable power supply for Auckland and Northland”, it says.

The job involves replacing cable joints on an underground electricity cable between its substations in Brownhill Road, Whitford, and Golfland Drive, Golflands, Pakūranga.

“This work will be completed in mid to late 2026 and importantly there will be no power interruptions arising from it,” says Transpower.

It has been working at cable joint bay sites around Whitford, Dannemora and East Tamaki over the past year.

“Each site needs an excavation area about the size of two buses and the work takes around five to six months to complete.

“Many of the joint bays are located under roads or on roadsides and require traffic management,” says Transpower.

The programme will be extending later this year to Point View Drive, Dunvegan Rise, Armoy Drive, Brownhill Rd, and Whitford Park Road.

“These are complex works that unfortunately do create some disruption for traffic, businesses, residents and some local reserves,” Transpower says.

It adds it’s “undertaking all efforts to minimise the disruption where possible and is working with landowners to help manage the effects of construction and to provide advance notice of the works”.
