Six east Auckland bands will battle it out at this year’s Rockshop Bandquest, the nationwide music contest for intermediate and primary students.
They will be among 177 young school bands lined up to perform at one of Rockshop Bandquest’s 12 live shows across the country.
Bands from Howick Intermediate, Somerville Intermediate, Saint Kentigern College and Farm Cove Intermediate will perform at the Manukau Final on Saturday August 6 at the Dorothy Winstone Centre.
For many this will be their first time performing on a fully set up stage with a light show and professionally mixed sound.
“They’re performing to their peers and families, which puts them under a little bit of pressure, but in a supportive environment,” says Rockshop Bandquest founder Glenn Common.
He says he has seen many bands progress from Bandquest to performing in the SmokeFree Rockquest in later years.
The bands will play one or two songs on the night. While the focus is on performance skills, there is an award for the best original song to encourage bands to write their own material.
Tickets are $10 at the door.
