Artworks exploring the connection between past and present feature in the new installation of the Howick Frames creative project.

Run by Arts Out East in collaboration with Phantom Billstickers, Howick Village Association, and a dedicated local business owner, the innovative public art initiative is a platform for local creatives to showcase their talents in a highly visible, community-centered setting.

The latest installation is entitled bom dia! and is by local artist Brunelle Dias.

Howick Frames is a dynamic space featuring rotating exhibitions and is located in the Wellington Street car park, adjacent to Rices Mall.

Dias’s captivating work presents images of recent and past paintings that explore her experiences of living in Pakuranga, leaving, and returning to her suburban home and greater east Auckland.

“Through her art, Brunelle reflects on her relationship with her environment, using painting as a means of transformation and understanding,” Arts Out East broker Ashley Grogan says.

“The works invite the viewer to explore their own concept of ‘local’ beyond just geography, encouraging deeper and more meaningful connections with their surroundings and, ultimately, themselves.”

Dias, who’s based in Auckland, is a painter with strong local ties.

She completed her Masters of Visual Art at AUT University in 2021 and has exhibited her work in spaces such as RM Gallery, Page Galleries, and Nathan Homestead.

Her art is characterized by an exploration of the intimacy between figure and ground and the connections between past and present.

People can view bom dia! in the Wellington Street car park over the next four months. New works from Dias will be featured on rotation each month.
