People are invited to hear local author Renisa Viraj Maki read from her new children’s book at an event in east Auckland.
Viraj Maki’s latest work is entitled What’s in a name? He aha tō te Ingoa?.
She will read from it at Howick Library in Uxbridge Road from 10.30am-11.30am on Wednesday, November 20. Her book will be for sale and are all welcome.
Her previous book, The Grandmothers of Pikitea Street, was previously recognised as a Storylines Notable Book.
Viraj Maki’s new book highlights the importance of understanding and correctly pronouncing other people’s names.
It’s set in a multicultural school in New Zealand and follows Priyanka, a young girl tasked with reading out her classmates’ names at the end-of-year assembly.
She’s determined to learn to pronounce them correctly to show respect for their cultural and ethnic backgrounds as she comes to appreciate the mana each name holds for her friends and their whānau.
