An east Auckland café is staging a special one-day Christmas Market with the goal of celebrating social and economic inclusion.
It’s at Te Tuhi Café in Pakuranga and is operated in partnership with Rescare Homes Trust.
“This festive event aims to bring our community together to celebrate and support Aotearoa New Zealand-made, socially conscious products,” Te Tuhi community programme manager Ashley Grogan says.
“It’s the perfect opportunity to enjoy delicious food, explore unique creations, and connect with others in a welcoming environment.
“Our Christmas Market is more than just a marketplace. It’s a celebration of social and economic inclusion, showcasing the potential and talents within our community.
“As most stallholders will be accepting cash only, we encourage visitors to bring cash to support these local businesses.”
Te Tuhi Café is New Zealand’s first training café for people with intellectual disabilities.
It’s run in partnership with Rescare Homes Trust and the University of Auckland.
The café offers in-house training and paid employment through a community-based programme, providing meaningful work opportunities and fostering independence.
It serves barista-made coffee and a range of homemade cabinet food, along with a made-to-order menu featuring vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options.
“As Aotearoa’s pioneering training café for people with intellectual disabilities, we pride ourselves on being a welcoming space for all,” Grogan says.
“Our fully accessible building features step-free entrances, accessible parking, and toilets to ensure everyone can enjoy the event.
“We can’t wait to see you there for a morning of community spirit, support, and holiday cheer!”
There will be plenty of high-quality handmade gifts for sale as well as a range of tasty treats.
The Christmas Market is at Te Tuhi, 21 William Roberts Road, Pakuranga, from 10am-1pm on Saturday, November 23.
