Te Tuhi and O Wairoa Marae invite the local community to get along and join in the fun at the Matariki Festival.

It’s at O Wairoa Marae in Howick and is being staged to mark the Māori New Year and to bring people together.

It offers the chance to experience Mātauranga Māori (Māori knowledge) and Toi Māori (Māori art) through performances, workshops, art and craft demonstrations, and plenty of tasty food.

Festival Highlights

The event begins with a public ceremony at 10am to officially launch the festival activities.

Workshops and demonstrations

Visitors are invited to immerse themselves in various workshops and demonstrations including tītī tōrea (short stick game), mau rākau (weaponry using long sticks), raranga (weaving), poi making, and he ara uku (clay work).

Cultural performances

They can enjoy a range of performances in the Uxbridge Theatre, featuring Chinese dancers and kapa haka performances from local schools.

International

The International Women’s Association will offer activities including dumpling making and tasting, a traditional Chinese tea ceremony, learning te reo, paper cutting, sugar artistry, lantern making and much more.

BBQ

Organisers say there will be a free sausage sizzle and vegan hot pot served throughout the day.

“Everyone is welcome for a free day of festivities, cultural enrichment, and community engagement as we celebrate Matariki and the spirit of togetherness.”

The festival runs from 10am to 3pm on June 15 at O Wairoa Marae and Uxbridge Arts and Culture at 35 Uxbridge Road, Howick.
