There’ll be a whole lot more brilliant live music concerts across our Auckland territory and beyond around New Zealand over the next few days, but here’s what’s on PJ’s Gig Radar…
- Tony Painting and Blues Power, at Bosuns Bar, The Prospect of Howick/Good Home, Friday, February 28. Bar ticket sales $25.
I’ll write it once, I’ll write it a thousand times, Tony Painting is the blues music king of Howick, a guitarist of style and substance who takes his craft seriously in continuing to fly the flag for the American, British and Kiwi rhythm n’ blues.
Painting can, as he’d say, boogie on the guitar, as he pays homage to the greats – Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Rory Gallagher, Gary Moore, Jimi Hendrix, BB King, Peter Green and Robben Ford.
Tony’s got a newly formed four-piece band who’ll be playing their Stevie Ray Vaughan with Friends Tribute Show.
“It’s a must see and hear show for those who like to ‘git up ‘n boogie’ or sit and listen to the best blues and classic rock songs around,” he says.

- The Black Flames, with support from Andrew Healey, at Galatos, Newton, Friday, February 28. Live from 8.15pm.
A hot-off-the-press release from The Black Flames comms’ dept:
‘There hasn’t been a band like The Black Flames since Netherworld Dancing Toys and The Neighbours packed the nations pubs.
‘This new 11-piece powerhouse, including a five-piece horn section, features Netherworld founder Nick Sampson along with ex-members of The Neighbours, NZ’s Blues Brothers Review and Auckland’s legendary Instigators.
‘Grab your dancing shoes, The Flames are here with a barnstorming potpourri of horn fuelled rockin’ soul.
‘Songs you know and love already like In the Midnight Hour, Hold Back the Night and For Today, plus some new ones you soon will.’

- Music in Parks Mission Bay, at the beach-side park with the water fountain, Saturday, March 1, 1-5pm, free entry.
Music in Parks organisers say Captain Festus McBoyle’s Travellin’ Variety Show hits the stage first, “bringing their madcap musical comedy to entertain the kids”.
“Then, dark-pop artist Michèle Ducray delivers spellbinding songs about the fantastical and mystical.
“Huia Hamon takes over with electronic beats, organic percussion, live guitars and deep harmonies.
“Huia’s set is a richly layered big bass sound with conscious lyrics in te reo Māori, English and a touch of Spanish.
“Lost Tribe Aotearoa heads this line-up. The eight-piece family-based band brings a sound that’s an eclectic mix of roots, dub, rock, ska and blues.
“They’re known for their high-energy live shows – head on down to Mission Bay to catch their uplifting vibes,” say Music in Parks organisers.
