A heartwarming cinematic tale of the bonds between people in difficult times is holding its global premiere in east Auckland.

The invitation-only debut screening of Teddy Show is at Uxbridge Arts and Culture in Howick on March 25.

The film is written and directed by the award-winning director Yalin Zou and stars renowned New Zealand actor Mark Hadlow and mixed-heritage young actress Meiling.

The choice to stage the premiere on March 25 holds deep significance as it marks the fifth anniversary of New Zealand’s first lockdown due to Covid-19.

It was a time filled with challenges, but it also witnessed sincere care and mutual support between people, the movie’s makers say.

“During the lockdown, a heartwarming activity called the ‘Teddy Bear Hunt’ quietly took off across New Zealand.

“People placed teddy bears in windows, doorways, and yards, allowing children to experience joy in searching and discovering, while also strengthening the bonds between communities during these unique times.

“In Howick, Susan Mudford created the ‘Big Ted and Friends’ series, which brought comfort and hope to both children and adults.

“This warmth and kindness became the inspiration for Teddy Show.”

Actors Mark Hadlow, left, and mixed-heritage young actress Meiling are among the cast.

Set against the backdrop of New Zealand’s lockdown during the pandemic, Teddy Show tells the story of a young girl, who, with the help of her grandfather, creates Teddy shows with love and creativity to bring hope and warmth to people.

Through the pure gaze of a child, it leads the audience to “reflect on warm moments of mutual support and moving forward together, and, in the interplay of light and shadow, revisits the warmth and resilience of human nature”.

Teddy Show has been selected for six film festivals and has won three awards.

Yalin Zou is an award-winning filmmaker who’s received multiple accolades at Chinese and international film festivals and is now based in Auckland.

He focuses on realistic themes in his work and is known for his objective and authentic style in portraying the goodness and beauty of ordinary people.

He says he digs into ordinary life to uncover content with social significance and artistic value.

Teddy Show is not just a film. It’s a reflection of real life and a testament to love and hope.

“I hope this film can transcend time and space, touching every soul in need of comfort.

“Let us move forward together, overcome all difficulties, and make the world a better place.”

The film will be globally released on Vimeo at the end of this month following its premiere.
