UPDATED – Police hunting offender following incident at night market

Police have cordoned off an area at the Pakuranga Night Market after a violent incident tonight.

Emergency services are tonight responding to a violent incident at east Auckland’s Pakuranga Night Market.

A person at the scene has told the Times more than 10 police officers and Hato Hone St John paramedics are in attendance as of 7.15pm tonight, June 21.

The night market is held in the underground car park at Pakuranga Plaza.

A photo of the scene shows a large number of police and what appears to be blood on the ground.

An area of the market has been cordoned off with yellow police tape.

A police spokesperson says: “Police are responding to a report of an assault on Aylesbury Street at around 6.45pm.

“Two people have been seriously injured. Enquiries are ongoing to locate the alleged offender.

“Cordons are currently in place and we advise members of the public to avoid the area.”

A spokesperson for Hato Hone St John says the organisation responded to the incident at about 6.50pm with two rapid response vehicles, three ambulances and an operations manager.

Police issued a public statement on the incident at 8.07pm that says: “Police are responding to an assault at the Pakuranga Night Market.

“At around 6:45pm, emergency services were called to Aylesbury Street, where two people were located critically injured.

“Cordons are in place around Aylesbury Street and Reeves Road, members of the public are advised to avoid the area.

“Police are currently following lines of enquiry to locate the alleged offender.

“Initial enquiries suggest this is an isolated incident and there is not believed to be any further risk to the public.

“There will be a visible police presence in the area throughout this evening as enquiries continue.”
