A system fault has been revealed as the cause of an alarm that caused shoppers at the new Pak’nSave Highland Park to recently be evacuated into the car park.

The incident happened at the $100 million store, which opened on February 25, on March 7.

A photo sent to the Times of the store at the time showed dozens of shoppers outside in the car park. A fire truck was in attendance just after 2pm.

Fire crews from the Howick and Mount Wellington fire stations responded to the incident.

A shopper who was present at the time said there was no sign of smoke, but a large number of trolleys containing groceries had to be left inside the supermarket as people were ushered outside.

A spokesperson for Foodstuffs told the Times: “Last week, a system fault triggered the fire alarm at our new store.

“This is not uncommon with a new building, but safety is always our priority.

“The issue was quickly checked and resolved, and we appreciate everyone’s patience.”
