The finishing touches are being put on east Auckland’s newest supermarket as it prepares to open its doors to customers.

The brand new Pak’nSave Highland Park is set to open to shoppers at 7.30am on Tuesday, February 25.

People who travel around the area will have seen the massive yellow building taking shape in recent months.

Foodstuffs says the development will add nearly 7,000m2 of state-of-the-art supermarket and specialty retail space to the area.

“Approximately 250 roles are being created with over 200 job offers made so far.

“There will be specialist departments for bakery, butchery, deli, produce and seafood as well as 12 team member-operated checkouts and 14 self-checkouts.”

The site has been home to a supermarket since 1978 when Progressive Enterprises built a Foodtown on the corner of Pakuranga Road and Aviemore Drive.

Foodstuffs North Island bought the site in 2017 and when the lease ended in 2023, construction of the new Pak’nSave Highland Park began.

Wade and Diana Brown are the owner-operators of the new supermarket.

Pak’nSave Highland Park will be the third supermarket they’ve owned and operated.

The couple joined the Foodstuffs North Island co-operative in 2013 as the owner-operators of New World Kawerau in the Bay of Plenty.

In 2017 they moved from Kawerau to become the owner operators of New World Kumeū.

Wade Brown says he and Diana are “incredibly excited and humbled to be opening a new flagship Pak’nSave store for the community of Highland Park”.

“Opening a new store is a fantastic challenge and we’ve been working hard for months to ensure we deliver a really competitive offer that meets all the needs of the locals.”

Diana Brown adds: “We’re very community minded with a proven track record of proactively supporting a wide range of local groups and are already building connections in the area.

“We’ll be working with Kiwi Harvest, our food rescue partner, to ensure any food we are unable to sell but that’s still good to eat will not be wasted.

“We’re really pleased to have an opportunity to grow and develop our team, with a number of our people enrolled in apprenticeships and professional development.”
