A 25 year mission to revitalise a local reserve is being celebrated even as the Friends of Mangemangeroa mourn the passing of the group’s last founding member.
“We are excited to celebrate 25 years of restoration,” Friends’ chair, Marion Skelton, says. “[This has required] tireless efforts in restoring the previously grazed land. Our ‘hands-on’ approach has actively engaged the local community in caring for this environment and recognising its importance. Approximately eight hectares has been restored with an estimated 120,000 plants.”
The group also acknowledged the support of Forest & Bird, local councils and numerous individuals who have contributed to a lengthy, yet effective, project.
Jim Duckworth, who passed away in April, received special mention at the group’s recent annual general meeting.
“Jim will be sadly missed… we will remember the many good times, Ms Skelton adds. “His memory will live on in all that he has done as a [founding] member,” she adds.
