Motorists travelling near or through what’s described as one of New Zealand’s busiest traffic intersections are advised there are closures and diversions coming during night hours.

Works are scheduled between 10pm and 4am at the intersection of Tī Rākau Drive and the South-Eastern Highway from tonight, March 19.

Auckland Transport (AT) says the other nights when the closures and diversions will be in place are March 20, 23, 24, 26; April 14 and 16; and May 5 and 7.

“The overnight road closures will be in place to enable concrete pouring on Rā Hihi (flyover) over Tī Rākau Drive to take place safely and when there are fewest people using the roads,” AT says.

“The closures will be from 10pm to 4am each night. Westbound traffic from the direction of Botany along Tī Rākau Drive will still be able to access the South-Eastern Highway.

“All other traffic will be detoured around the closures.

“Tī Rākau Drive traffic will be diverted along Cortina Place and William Roberts Road.

“Traffic from the South-Eastern Highway will be diverted along Pakūranga Road and Gossamer Drive,” AT says.

Meanwhile, on Pakūranga Road (highway) near the Pakūranga shopping centre, AT says “there will be changes to lane layouts on until April while the watermain is installed under the road and connected to the existing network”.

“The number of traffic lanes will be adjusted each day to cater for peak vehicle volumes in the morning towards the city and in the early evening towards Howick,” AT says.

Meanwhile, residents using vehicles in the Edgewater area of Pakūranga will have to put up with further disruptions to accessing their properties because of ongoing works associated with the Eastern Busway construction works.

AT is advising that access to Roseburn Place from Tī Rākau Drive “has temporarily changed” and is asking motorists to “follow detour road”.

That work is slated to be finished in “late March”.

The entrance to Tiraumea Drive from Tī Rākau Drive has been closed since last month and will be until late April.

“Use Mattson Road as an alternative access,” AT says, of the Tiraumea Drive “road closure”.

A temporary accessway and piling platform for the new busway bridge and cycleway are taking shape beside Tī Rākau Drive Bridge near Burswood.

AT is also advising that the “road closure” involving access to Edgewater Drive (east) from Tī Rākau Drive is due to end on March 23.

“Use the western end traffic light entrance near Edgewater shopping centre,” says AT.

People also accessing Freemantle Place are also advised by AT there will be “periodic night work and lane changes” in that street until late April.

AT describes the creation of Rā Hihi (flyover) as a “groundbreaking development in progress in Pakūranga that’s set to soar above Reeves Road and across Tī Rākau Drive”.

“It’s an important part of the Eastern Busway project that will improve travel times and ease congestion in the area,” AT says.

“Establishing this direct link between Pakūranga Road and the South-Eastern Highway will lead to a reduction in traffic along Pakūranga Road and Tī Rākau Drive, particularly during peak hours.

“Work to build Rā Hihi began in March 2024 and it will take approximately two years to complete.

“During that time, access to the Pakūranga town centre, local businesses and homes are being maintained to minimise disruption to the community.

“To help residents navigate the changing road layouts, we provide information about alternative routes, including the new link from William Roberts Road to Tī Rākau Drive,” says AT.
