So you can catch fish on an easterly?

Keen fisherman Pierre Trollip recently had another successful day on the water. Photo supplied

East Auckland resident PIERRE TROLLIP knows his way around a fishing rod and line. Here’s his latest column for the Times.

Hi there from this very fortunate ‘Fishing Pensioner’.

Recently, the Admiral and I had the pleasure to wander down Picton Street during the annual Howick Village Hop.

The restored old vehicles as well as the hot rods were quite impressive.

Live rock music by Foxtail Rumble kept the party going.

What a great way to spend a Saturday morning. My favourite was the 1970’s VW Kombi bus.

Of course, I’ve also been fishing. Two weeks ago, wind out of the east, I steamed to Graeme’s secret spot.

Everyone tells you that everyone says: “You don’t catch fish on an easterly”.

Well, I proved them all wrong. Approaching this secret spot, I had to keep an eye on the depth sounder and chart plotter.

I didn’t want to hit a reef like a navy vessel near Samoa recently.

(But in her defence, the reef was probably a new one and not on the chart).

On the second or third bite, I had to scramble for the net to land a 48cm snapper.

Thanks Graeme, your secret is safe.

Back in Howick village, at The Prospect, we had a wonderful Sunday afternoon listening to live jazz provided by East Aisle Trio.

Last week, I was advised the fish were biting off Woody Bay, Rakino Island.

This proved to be correct – thanks for the tip, Cliff. I had a wonderful few hours fishing this area.

The snapper were plentiful, though small. If I was keeping 31cm and 32cm snapper, I would have caught my quota early.

One of my viewers commented that I kept catching the same fish.

At times, it felt exactly like that. I also flew the drone for some video.

An absolutely lovely day on the water. Hard to be disappointed with a day like that.

After all, in this story, no one gets out alive. You’ve got to do it.

The Howick Village Hop as well as the last two fishing trips are on my YouTube Channel: OutSmart – The Fishing Pensioner. Like, subscribe and share.

A huge thank you to all of my viewers who make this possible.
