Bookings have closed and it’s a full field that will contest a one-day east Auckland golf event that raises crucial funds for a much-respected charity.

Played at the Pakuranga Golf Club each year, the Totara Hospice Charity Golf Tournament tees off this Friday, November 15, for the 32nd year.

Organisers says it’s “the longest running charity golf tournament in Auckland”.

“This year we again have renowned sports photographer Michael Thomas flying up from Queenstown, with his assistant, to cover the event.

“Michael pays all his and assistant’s costs and his services are free in support of the work we do to raise funds for Totara Hospice,” says the organisers.

The 144 men and women golfers will play a gross, nett and Stableford competition, and there’s a special division for players aged 75 and older.

The day’s programme is very full and includes golf competitions for putting and drive distances.

Once the golf rounds are completed, players will have the chance to enjoy traditional 19th hole activities such as food and beverages, and raffle draws.

And it’s the auction prizes that are what’s so impressive about this charity tournament.

This year auction items include autographed All Blacks, Kiwis, and Black Ferns Sevens team jerseys for 2024, a golf trip package in New Zealand worth $8000, a Lydia Ko-signed pitching wedge valued at $4000, a Blues Super Rugby VIP experience valued at $1000, a guitar autographed by Sir Dave Dobbyn that’s valued as “priceless”, a two-night accommodation package for four at Mahuika, Waiheke Island, worth $8000, and a five-nights’ accommodation package for six people in Fiji valued at $3000.

An illustration of how important this event is viewed within the east Auckland community is by the number of official sponsors, 18.

“The Totara Hospice Charity Golf Tournament stands as a testament to the power of combining sport with compassion,” say the organisers.

“With a rich history of giving back to the community, this annual golf tournament has become a cornerstone event in support of Totara Hospice.

“This event relies on the generosity of all sponsors and in particular the members of the BNI Howick Chapter who volunteer their time and make donations, as well as the Pakuranga Golf Club who provide the golf course, facilities, and tournament management free of charge. We appreciate you all.”
