Police armed with rifles are responding to an incident in a residential east Auckland street.

The police’s Eagle helicopter is also in the area. A Times reporter at the location says several police officers are aiming firearms at a property.

One officer using a loud-haler is telling its occupants to come to the front door with their hands in the air.

Other officers appear to be taking statements from nearby residents.

Police have closed Union Road at the intersection with Whitford Road as of 4.30pm and motorists and pedestrians should avoid the area.

A police spokesperson says: “Police are in attendance at a property in Howick following the discovery of an alleged clan lab this afternoon.

“Police were called to the Cosy Place property at 1.49pm following a report of suspicious activity at the address.

“Upon arrival police located a number of items allegedly consistent with a clandestine laboratory.

“A scene examination has been under way and enquiries remain ongoing.”
