Police allege a man charged over the death of a child killed her yesterday, January 5, at a location in east Auckland.

A police spokesperson said earlier today that Counties Manukau Police are investigating the death of a young child overnight.

A man arrived at the Manukau Police Station at about 1am this morning and spoke to police staff, leading to the discovery of a deceased child in the vehicle.

The spokesperson says the 37-year-old man is known to the child and family.

“He has been arrested and will appear in the Manukau District Court later today, charged with murder.

“A post-mortem and other enquiries will be carried out this week, and Victim Support is providing support to the child’s mother and family.”

Court documents state the man has been charged with murder and wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The accused, who lives in South Auckland, is alleged to have killed the girl in East Tamaki.
