Fire crews from three stations responded to reports of a grass fire in rural east Auckland in the early hours of this morning, February 6.
A spokesperson for Fire and Emergency NZ says downed powerlines started the fire on Whitford-Maraetai Road in Whitford, about 300 metres past the intersection with Clifton Road.
The fire burned an area of land about 10 metres by 20 metres.
Firefighters from the Beachlands, Clevedon and Otara fire stations responded to the incident.
“We had two fire trucks in attendance and one water tanker,” the spokesperson said this morning.
“The fire’s been extinguished and the incident was left with [power company] Vector.
“We were called at about 2.40am and left at 4.29am.
“The fire was extinguished at 3.27am and we were just dampening down the hot spots.
“Unfortunately, the powerlines were still live, so we were monitoring the situation until those lines were de-energised and earthed.”
There were no reports of buildings or property being damaged by the fire.
