Twelve east Auckland martial arts practitioners (karateka) are heading to Japan for the pinnacle event in their sport.
The dozen elite athletes are from the Japan Karate Association New Zealand (JKANZ) dojo in Cockle Bay, the main one in the country.
They form half of the 24-strong national team competing in various categories at the Funakoshi Gichin Cup 16th Karate World Championship in Gunma, Japan, on October 25-27.
Sensei Karl Naoroji, of the Cockle Bay dojo and JKANZ chief instructor, says the Kiwi contingent cannot wait to get amongst the action in what will be an “incredible event”.
“Excitement is building as we prepare to send the team of 24 talented karateka from across New Zealand.
“This tournament will showcase the best of traditional karate, bringing together participants from over 130 countries to compete in the true spirit of karate-do.”
Naoroji’s guidance and leadership has been instrumental in preparing the team for the world champs.
It’s acknowledged by the JKANZ that “Sensei Karl’s deep knowledge of traditional karate and his unwavering dedication have shaped our New Zealand karatekas, instilling the values of discipline, respect, and perseverance that karate stands for”.
“A special mention to our young athletes from Cockle Bay dojo in east Auckland who will kick off the competition on October 25 with determination and passion,” says the JKANZ.
On October 26-27, Labour Weekend Saturday and Sunday in New Zealand, the senior and veteran members from Cockle Bay will showcase their dedication, skill and spirit.
“The road to Japan has been paved with intense training and preparation,” says Naoroji.
“Squad training sessions have been held regularly, ensuring our karatekas are well tuned and in top form as they step onto the international stage.
“Just recently, our team took part in the JKA New Zealand International Championships, further honing their skills and building momentum approaching the world cup.
“This journey is not just about competition. It’s about representing New Zealand on a global stage, honouring the values that JKA instils in every karateka,” Naoroji says.
“We’re incredibly proud of each and every team member and grateful to the coaches, supporters and families, who have dedicated their time and effort being a part of this incredible journey.
“As we head to Gunma, Japan, we know the team will make New Zealand proud. To all karatekas – one way, JKA way!”

Women’s: Momoko Milua.
