Auckland’s Cornwall Park will be closed to the public from 7pm tonight, April 16, until further notice due to the extreme weather the city is set to experience in the coming days.

“The safety of our staff and the public is our highest priority and there may be unseen hazards due to the high winds that are expected,” a spokesperson says.

“Our gates will be closed from 7pm this evening and we are asking people not to enter the park from this time until further notice.

“All facilities within the park will be closed. This includes our toilets, Huia Lodge Discovery Hub, Acacia Cottage, the Bistro, Cafe and Creamery.

“We are constantly checking the situation. Please monitor our website, www.cornwallpark.co.nz, for updated information or check out our Facebook or Instagram pages.”

The MetService NZ says winds are expected to build this afternoon and ramp up this evening from Cyclone Tam, especially over Northland and Auckland.

Warnings and Watches are in place with possible impacts such as damage to trees, structures and powerlines, and possible travel disruptions.

Meanwhile, police are advising powerlines are currently down on Hibiscus Coast Highway in Silverdale.

Lines have come down between the intersections with East Coast Road and Tavern Road.

Eastbound and westbound traffic is being diverted via East Coast Road and Tavern Road.

Lines contractors are on site. Police advise motorists to avoid the area if at all possible, as traffic has built up in the area.

“Please continue to take care on our roads over the coming days.”
