One person is in custody and a loaded 3D printed firearm is off the streets following “great work” in east Auckland on Sunday, Counties Manukau East Police say.
At about 6.20am, police say officers were on their way to a family harm incident when they were flagged down by a member of the public on Te Irirangi Drive.
Counties Manukau East area prevention manager, inspector Rakana Cook, says the victim told police he was drinking with a group of males at the Manukau Velodrome when one of them presented a firearm towards him before leaving in a BMW motor vehicle.
“The Police Eagle helicopter was in the area and located five vehicles at the velodrome, one of which matched the description provided by the victim.
“Units have signalled for the vehicle to stop. However, it has fled from police towards Eterna Place, Clover Park,” Cook says.
Police did not initiate a pursuit, but the vehicle came to a stop after driving over bollards.
“The driver has attempted to run from the vehicle. However, police have quickly taken him into custody,” Cook says.
“Ammunition and cannabis were located on the driver and a loaded magazine and makeshift taser were found in the vehicle.”
Cook says police officers also stopped another vehicle, which was travelling with the BMW.
“Two females were taken into custody and a loaded 3D printed firearm was found in the vehicle, which matched the items found in the BMW.
“It’s very pleasing to take another dangerous weapon off the streets.
“This is yet another example of great proactive police work, which creates a safer community.
“Police will continue to patrol this area and are working with our partner agencies to ensure members of the public can be safe and feel safe while going about their business.”
A 29-year-old man is due to appear in the Manukau District Court today facing a number of charges, including presenting a firearm at a person, unlawful possession of a firearm, failing to stop and dangerous driving.
