A large steel structure located in front of a residential property in east Auckland has been damaged in a fire today, February 8.

A spokesperson for Fire and Emergency NZ says the blaze in Liston Crescent, Cockle Bay, was first reported at 1.51pm.

Firefighters from the Howick and Otara fire stations as well as police were in attendance at the property at 3pm.

Three fire trucks were in the street while a firefighter used a hose to dampen down the damaged structure.

A small crowd had gathered across the road to watch the scene unfold.

One man said he believed the structure was a portacom of some kind.

The large steel structure was damaged in the blaze.

A large number of items are occupying the front lawn of the property impacted and two young children were playing on a swing suspended from a tree nearby.

A resident of Liston Crescent says it’s understood the structure, which she referred to as a shed, was new and only installed this week.

A nearby date palm tree burned “very quickly”, she says, and the street’s residents have been left “shaken” by the fire.

Smoke billowing from the fire could be seen from a large distance away, including by people on a boat just off the east Auckland coastline.

A police spokesperson says officers initially attended to assist Fire and Emergency NZ and were later stood down.

A spokesperson for Hato Hone St John says the agency did not attend the incident.
