The Howick College girls’ rugby sevens team and reigning national secondary schools’ champions are on their way to Japan to compete in the Sanix World Youth Rugby Tournament.

The high-achieving east Auckland sevens squad is representing New Zealand schools and departs for Fukuoka tomorrow, Good Friday, April 18, for the contest that’s played on April 28-29.

The appearance marks Howick College’s return to the international stage, following their memorable fourth-place finish in 2019.

The squad of 14 players has been training hard since January under the guidance of very experienced and astute coach Waisake Sotutu.

Last year, the team claimed both the Auckland secondary schools’ sevens title in October and their third national championship at the Condor Sevens tournament in December.

In a thrilling national final against Hamilton Girls’ High School, they secured a 29-24 victory in extra time.

As the departure for Japan approaches, Sotutu says the players have had to balance their sevens preparations with the upcoming 15-a-side rugby season.

“Despite the absence of local sevens’ tournaments, which presents a challenge in achieving game fitness for Japan, our girls have dug deep and remain committed and focussed.

“To address the lack of competitive play, we’ve adjusted our training schedule to include three dedicated sevens training sessions and two fitness workouts a week with pleasing results,” says Sotutu.

Howick College principal Dale Burden says the school has immense pride in the team’s achievements both on and off the field.

“I wish this wonderful group of young women the very best as they prepare to face the top youth sevens teams in the world.

“They’re fortunate to have an exceptional coach and manager in Waisake and Adelita Sotutu.

“I’d also like to thank everyone involved in helping them get to Japan, especially their families and sponsors,” Burden says.

In its 25th year, the prestigious Sanix World Youth Rugby Tournament provides a valuable opportunity for the side to test their skills against the best youth teams from around the globe, promoting athletic excellence and cultural exchange.
