Auckland Transport’s (AT) Half Moon Bay ferry pier has won an Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia (IPWEA) New Zealand Excellence Awards – Best Public Works Project under $5 million.
The ferry pier which opened last year plays a pivotal role as a transport hub for the recently rolled out bus network for East Auckland.
The Howick Local Board contributed $2.5 million from its transport capital fund for the project. Chair David Collings says, “We’re really proud of this, as the board gave strong input into the project which has improved the experience for commuters. This award represents the significant investment in a connected public transport systems for Auckland, making it easier for people to switch between ferries and buses to get around the city.”
AT’s Public Transport Development Manager, Scott Keene says, “The award is a recognition of the innovation, skill and dedication within AT, its consultants, contractors and suppliers who have gone above and beyond in constructing the Half Moon Bay ferry pier.”
Construction is underway on the bus interchange at the end of Ara-Tai to support the better integration of ferry and bus services.
