A scrub fire broke out in Somerville at the Mangemangeroa Reserve on Monday in the early afternoon.

Alan Riley, the chair of Friends of Mangemangeroa Reserve, said: “Thanks to watchful neighbours and prompt Fire Service response, damage is limited. It stopped at the bottom fence below Archies, but spread North – South quite widely. It was burning on dried thatch under kikuyu (grass) and spread through the flax and manuka.”
Fire and emergency officers from Howick station soon had the flare-up under control.
