East Auckland secondary schools are shining on the sporting stage with their respective teams achieving impressive results in recent competitions.
Saint Kentigern College’s Junior Basketball Girls took out their division in the Greater Auckland Basketball competition.
The school took to social media to highlight the players’ success, saying they were unbeaten throughout the season going into the semi-final and finals day on August 27.
“First up was Epsom in which they had a convincing win setting them up for a final against Westlake.
“The final was close the whole game with each team taking leads throughout.
“With 11 seconds to go Jorja sealed a three-pointer to give our team a one-point lead which they held to win the game.”
Switching schools and codes, the Macleans College 1st XI Boys Football team is on a high after gaining promotion to premier grade for 2025 by finishing the A1 league season in first-place.
On August 23 they travelled to North Harbour Stadium for their final match of the season against Northcote College.
“To be crowned champions, the team required a win or a draw. The boys came away with a hard-fought 1-1 draw.”
Through the 14-week competition the Macleans College team, coached by Martin Rodwell, had nine wins, four draws and just one loss to finish three points ahead of the runners-up.
Sticking with football, Howick College’s 1st XI Football Girls were recently named Auckland provisional champions by beating Long Bay College 2-0 in a nail-biting final.
The match was locked up at 0-0 at halftime until Howick players Liv Cox and Sarah Enslin scored goals to give their side the victory.
The school says the team displayed “outstanding effort, with strong midfield play, steadfast defence, and stellar goalkeeping”.
“It was a memorable day for both the team and the school, showcasing their dedication and skill.”
The talented squad is preparing to compete in the Maurice Hulme Tournament in Taupo from September 2.
