The Pakuranga Tennis Club’s junior team were edged out of a win, for the second year in a row, in the annual Charman Trophy Tournament.
The Charman Trophy is competed for annually by junior teams in east Auckland in memory of local tennis personality Joy Charman who committed many years to tennis and tennis administration at local, regional and national level.
“Joy was particularly passionate about junior tennis and wanted to create this tournament to promote tennis within our local community,” Pakuranga Tennis Club’s Paul Tibbutt said.
Joy and husband Jack were both past presidents of the Pakuranga Club.
Junior teams from each of Bucklands Beach, Cockle Bay, Sunnyhills and Pakuranga Clubs play concurrently at each club over a full day of tennis.
“Pakuranga were just edged into second place by eight points by Bucklands Beach, vowing to be back next year, third time lucky,” Tibbutt said.
