How long have you been an educator, and where did you train?
I’ve been involved in teaching for 40 years. I trained in South Africa, completing a teaching diploma while full-time teaching at Bryanston High School in Johannesburg. Elon Musk attended the same school. I was principal of Rand Park High School, a state, co-educational school before emigrating to Aotearoa with my family in January 2003.
When did you become principal of Mission Heights Junior College?
I started at the beginning of term three in 2015.
What’s the best thing about being an educator and principal?
During my career there have been different aspects that I have enjoyed. Being blessed and privileged to share in the development and growth of young people is immensely satisfying as is the professional and personal development of our teachers and leaders. Having made some positive contribution in these areas is very rewarding.
What’s special about Mission Heights Junior College?
I love the junior college years which give us the freedom to be innovative and explore learning in a way that is engaging yet provides our students with foundations for future study. I also love the whānau, or “schools within a school” model, which promotes a genuine sense of belonging, connection and care for each and every student and members of staff.
Is there anything you’d like improved in the education/school management sector?
I believe each government sincerely believes it is contributing positively to achieving successful outcomes for students. But it can be frustrating to have to shift our focus as a school in the absence of what seems to be a long-term strategic plan, and one that recognises the need for a holistic approach which acknowledges progress, active and positive contribution to the community, living our values as well as achievement. Fortunately, at Mission Heights Junior College just as in other schools, we are able to focus on the student and what they need. This is our guiding principle and stands up to all other policies we are asked to implement. Recent announcements of increased resources being provided in the learning support sector are very encouraging as all schools have identified this as a massive need.
How is the relationship between MHJC and its immediate local community?
I would say we have a very positive relationship with our local community. Most of the time, things go according to plan and when they don’t, parents and the school are open to learning for the benefit of the students. I have always enjoyed very strong support from parents and in particular by our board. It is gratifying to know that the values and vision that we promote are shared by our community which makes it much easier to achieve our goals.
