Police say a “suspected” cannabis growing operation is the reason why armed officers were seen on two Howick streets on Friday afternoon.

Police told the Times today they’re making further enquiries “following the discovery of a suspected cannabis grow house” on September 27.

“Police were called to the Cosy Place property around 1.49pm following a report of suspicious activity at the address,” a police spokesperson says.

“Upon arrival police located a number of items allegedly consistent with a cannabis grow house.

“A scene examination has been completed and enquiries remain ongoing,” says the police spokesperson.

It was a dramatic scene on Friday afternoon as armed police with rifles were seen on the corner of usually peaceful Cosy Place and Union Road, in Howick.

They were focused on one property and the police’s Eagle helicopter was also circling the area above.

A Times reporter was at the location and said several police officers were aiming firearms at the residential property.

A police officer using a loud-haler was heard telling the property’s occupants to come to the front door with their hands in the air.

Other officers were taking statements from residents and members of the public watching on.

Police closed Union Road at the intersections with Moore Street and Whitford Road at 4.30pm and motorists and pedestrians were told to avoid the area.
