A gaping hole has been left in a timber fence outside an east Auckland cemetery after a vehicle crashed through it early this morning.
The incident happened at All Saints Anglican Church property on the corner of Cook Street and Selwyn Road in Howick.
Luckily, none of the gravestones at the cemetery were damaged in the crash.
A source told the Times her husband was out running this morning and saw a number of police officers appear to arrest several youths at the scene at about 5.40am.
The vehicle involved in the crash was being towed away at the time.
A large sign advertising the Howick Selwyn Centre was smashed in the crash and a nearby lamppost has been left dented from the impact of the vehicle.
Church staff have put the broken fence posts in a tidy pile near the gaping hole.
All Saints Anglican Church Reverend Andrew Coyle told the Times the church is “very glad” no one was hurt in the incident.
“There appears to have been no damage to any of the graves in that area – just one section of picket fence was destroyed!
“We are very grateful for the support of the police and for the care and concern shown by the community.”
A police spokesperson says officers took two youths into custody early this morning following a fleeing driver incident in Howick.
The incident occurred just before 5am, when the driver of a stolen car failed to stop for police on Bleakhouse Road.
“A pursuit was not initiated. A short time later officers located the stolen vehicle abandoned on Cook Street, where it appeared to have crashed into a road sign.
“No other vehicles were involved, and no injuries reported.
“All four occupants of the vehicle had fled on foot, with two 14-year-olds located and arrested thanks to the work of a police dog team.
“Enquiries are ongoing to locate the two others.”
