The Howick Returned and Services Association (RSA) is calling for volunteers to help on Poppy Day next month.
The volunteers would be required to do shifts at different places around the east Auckland community, providing the symbolic poppies for public donations on Friday, April 11.
“On this day we have been fundraising for many years where hard-working RSA volunteers exchange distinctive red poppies for a donation towards the [national RSA] Poppy Appeal,” says the Howick RSA.
Money raised assists the welfare of Defence Force veterans.
“All funds raised go towards our vital support work, which can include financial support, advocacy, transportation, and access to a strong network of people who have been through similar experiences, to name a few.
“We’re a small group of volunteers organising this important day and to make it as successful as possible we would love to have more volunteers involved.”
The Howick RSA would like collectors who are available for a few hours on Poppy Day at various locations around east Auckland from 8.30am to 4.30pm on April 11.
It would also like donation collectors for the Howick Village Market on Saturday, April 12, and Saturday, April 19, from 7.30am to 1pm on both days.
The Howick RSA is also asking Defence Force veterans to be involved at the collection points.
“Veterans in uniform to represent the importance of honouring the sacrifice they have made and the symbol of the red poppy and its national significance.”
The Howick RSA says it also needs four or five coordinators to help organise Poppy Day for a few hours a week until Poppy Day.
“The roles include dropping collection boxes to schools, rest homes and local businesses, and picking them up again. They also support collection sites on April 11-12.
“We also need a couple of reliable people to drop collection tables and chairs to various
locations in east Auckland, and pick them up again later in the day, or the following day.”
