Teenager Jimmy Zheng, who plays out of Howick Golf Club, has won two provincial titles in one week.
Zheng, who finished at Macleans College last year, has clinched both the Auckland Provincial Strokeplay and Auckland Provincial Matchplay Championships on his home course at Musick Point.
The 18-year-old won the Auckland Provincial Strokeplay carding a nine-under 129 to win by four shots.
The matchplay was a single round elimination. Zheng won 5/4 in a round of 16, 7/6 in the semis, 5/4 in the quarters and then 2/1 in the final.
Zheng, who plays off a +4.0 handicap (this means he shoots 4 under par regularly), has been recognised with the award of an academic and sporting scholarship to Duke, one of the powerhouses of American Collegiate sport.
He is attending Duke University virtually this semester but plans on going over next year.
The recent championship wins made for a great week, Zheng told the Times.
“It was great to be able to play at my home club, having a little advantage and having home-course knowledge was definitely a contributing factor that week,” he said.
“Being able to win these events is amazing. It has always been a goal of mine to win an Auckland golf event and to be able to win two in one week in truly amazing.
“Thank you to everyone who has helped me along the way. I definitely want to dedicate this win to my parents. Without their endless support, I definitely wouldn’t have been able to make it this far.”
