Howick College’s girls’ First XV Rugby team’s stellar season has continued with qualification for the National Top 4 competition after a decisive win over North Harbour Champions Westlake.
After winning the Auckland competition last month, the team coached by former Blues star Waisake Sotutu secured their spot with a thumping 42-14 victory.
Marica Tukana once again showcased her exceptional talent, scoring two tries and creating additional opportunities with her explosive runs.
Maddison Motuliki also made her mark, adding a try of her own and setting up another for wing Taylor Bennett with her dynamic open-field running.
In the backs, Jaedah Hansen provided a reliable presence at fullback, expertly handling Westlake’s kicking game and sparking counterattacks from turnover ball.
The win means Howick College, along with boy’s counterparts Kelston, will be representing the Blues region in a Champions League-type competition set along Super Rugby lines.
They will make the trek to Palmerston North this Thursday to play against the country’s best girl’s teams which include South Island winners Christchurch Girls High School, Manukura High School from the Hurricanes region and Hamilton Girls from the Chiefs area.
Waisake Sotutu said the team is excited to compete on the national stage and
are focused on giving their best performance;
“Their journey so far has been nothing short of extraordinary, and I couldn’t be more impressed with their grit and determination on the field.”
“The entire community is behind us, and we want to make not only Howick College proud but also the whole Blues region,” Sotutu added.
Howick will meet Christchurch Girls on Friday, and depending on results, the girls could
potentially meet either Hamilton Girls or reigning champions Manukura in the final matches
that will determine the top four positions.
