Emergency services this morning have rushed to the scene of a fire that had engulfed a parked van in an east Auckland street.
Local resident Mark M sent the Times photographs of the incident in which smoke can be seen billowing from the stationary vehicle.
In the photos, Fire and Emergency NZ officers from the Howick fire station are seen extinguishing the blaze at about 8am on Wednesday.
The incident was in Summermist Drive, Northpark, near Howick.
Mark M says: “I smelt smoke through my window and wondered if I had an electrical fault.
“Then I noticed thick smoke on Northpark Avenue outside the window.
“Neighbours were running up to the intersection of Summermist Drive and Northpark Avenue and many were on the phone to the Fire Brigade.
“Traffic control first turned up to put cones out, then Fire and Emergency NZ and the police came when it was almost put out,” says Mark M.
The Times has been told by police it received information at 8.05am of a van on fire on Summermist Drive.
“Fire and Emergency NZ requested police assistance at the scene.
“Fortunately, there are no reports of injuries and at this stage there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the fire.”
Police say the matter has been left with Fire and Emergency NZ.
