HCYT presents: The Insect Play

LTR: Freya Gander, 16, Brianna Reynolds, 16 & Sophie Fookes, 14.

If you go down to the woods today, you’re sure of a big surprise.

By the woods, we mean Star of the Sea Park, and by surprise, we mean a brilliant performance from Howick Children’s and Youth Theatre.

A cast of 25 students between the ages of 15 and 20 will perform The Insect Play for four nights only — the culmination of eight weeks of hard work.

In The Insect Play, a tramp/narrator falls asleep in the woods and dreams of observing a range of insects that stand in for various human characteristics in terms of their lifestyle and morality: the flighty, vain butterfly; the obsequious self-serving dung beetle and the ants, whose increasingly mechanised behaviour leads to a militaristic society. The anthropomorphised insects closely mimic post-war human society.

HCYT deputy principal Kelly Raos says they deliver about eight productions a year of varying levels, however outdoor productions only take place every two years.

“Performing outdoors at Star of the Sea Park is an amazing opportunity for the older students to experience the magic and added challenge of live, outdoor theatre,” she said.
