Award-winning conductor Ray Chan will be back on home turf next week for the Manukau Symphony Orchestra’s (MSO) 25th anniversary.
The Macleans College alumni will lead the orchestra’s celebration show ‘Dance and Sing’ which kicks off on Saturday 17 March at the Vodafone Events centre.
Chan says he is excited to bring spectacular classical and modern music to the people of Manukau in this high energy show.
“This concert is definitely a little out of the ordinary and has a little something for everybody,” he says.
The orchestra will be performing Rossini’s William Tell Overture, selections from Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, Vivaldi’s Oboe Concerto and Arias by Mozart and Puccini, among others in a show that promises to capture the hearts of the entire audience.
While this is Chan’s first collaboration with the MSO, he has experience leading the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra, among others.
Chan’s big break came when he competed in the Vienna Mastercourse Competition and paved the way to him being the first New Zealander to study conducting at the Royal Academy of Music in London.
“Conducting takes music to a whole new level in the sense that you have to be engaging and mobilising a lot of people at the same time.”
He says he’s thrilled to be back conducting where his love of music began.
He’s encouraging all the locals to come along to support an orchestra that has brought “so much joy” to their community over the years.
