A Howick infant has been taken into care after suffering serious injuries believed to be consistent with domestic abuse.
The four-month-old baby girl was admitted to Middlemore Hospital on February 18 where medical staff discovered significant fractures to her skull, ribs, arms and legs.
The fractures have been described by medical experts as being of varying ages and classically associated with non-accidental injury.
A police investigation into the incident has been launched and they are calling for anyone with information to come forward.
While the child is expected to make a full recovery, police are “extremely concerned” by these injuries and Oranga Tamariki has been notified, says Detective Senior Sergeant Eddie Sutherland.
The child’s family and neighbours have been questioned but police say they are no closer to finding out who inflicted the injuries on the child.
Detective Senior Sergeant Sutherland says the safety and wellbeing of the child is paramount and she is currently in the care of Oranga Tamariki.
“Police have not yet charged anyone however our enquiries are ongoing,” he says.
“We are now urging anyone with information which can assist our investigation to do the right thing and contact police.”
