Poppies for Stockade Hill campaign

Howick bookshop Poppies has been encouraging people to re-read and re-home their books – with all the proceeds going to a very good cause.

“In these times of downsizing and clearing out clutter, many of us have a lot of books we simply don’t know what to do with.” said Poppies owner Tony Moores.

“Our fundraising book swap scheme invited the public to bring in their unwanted books. We put them on display for anyone to swap a book for a gold coin donation.”

They were inundated with books –  so much so, that they had to call a halt to the bags and boxes of donated books that came pouring in from generous donors.

Book hunters of all ages were able to pick up a bargain with a mass of titles, both old and new, that ranged from fiction, biographies, children’s books, arts and crafts and cooking.

As well as finding new homes for hundreds of books, the pre-loved book sale raised $700, all of which has been donated to the ongoing campaign to Save Stockade Hill Views.

Andrew Laing for the Stockade Hill Defencibles said, “We are so grateful to Tony and the staff of Poppies for raising this money to support our cause. Every single dollar helps us continue the fight to retain these iconic views for the people of Howick, by helping pay for legal and expert advice”.

Poppies still has a table of used books only costing one gold coin each, with all proceeds going to Save Stockade Hill Views Campaign, so pop in and see what treasures await you.
