St Kents rugby star wins bronze boot award

Big things are tipped for Saint Kentigern College captain Cam Church if his recent display in the NZ Schools international is anything to go by. Photo supplied

Saint Kentigern College first XV captain Cam Church continued his path to higher honours by being named as the 2019 recipient of the Rugby News/Jerry Collins Memorial Bronze Boot award, in recognition of his impressive performance in the recent school’s international with Australia.

Unfortunately for the young team in black, they lost their first game since 2012 to their trans-Tasman rivals, despite a strong second half comeback and being down 12-0 at the break. Church got on the scoresheet, touching down on the left-hand flank after an impressive pace-filled gallop more reminiscent of a winger than an openside.

The future is bright for the 17-year old, who is in his last year of school. The Times caught up with Cam and asked him what his plans are after he finishes?
“I am starting a building apprenticeship next while training in the Auckland academy before and after work” says Cam.

Church has aligned himself with the University Club and has been part of the Blues under 18 academy programme this year and is “eyeing selection for the under 20 side next season”.

His list of favourite players includes fellow loose forward Ardie Savea, halfback TJ Perenara, “and of course Richie McCaw”.

Here’s hoping Cam can emulate the achievements of New Zealand’s most capped player and revered captain. He is certainly one to watch.
